The Challenge
Upgrading a Core Product’s Legacy Software to Optimize for Growth
PetroBase creates oilfield software solutions. One of its key products is PetroBase Explorer – a software solution which provides oilfield intelligence, tracks new production & well activity, and exports data to third party GIS mapping and production analysis programs. This solution had been on the market for over a year but had stalled due to technical limitations.
The Problem
A large portion of PetroBase’s time was being spent supporting its legacy PetroBase Explorer product. The legacy product consisted of a desktop client that was installed on every customer system, and as a result, very large data updates were required monthly to see new oilfield data. The solution was designed with Visual Basic and Access – which are not intended to be scaled out as commercial grade software.
We were tasked with redesigning Explorer and creating an updated software solution that could scale for a larger customer base. The PetroBase staff could focus on growing their customer base and expanding to other profitable markets.
The Process
We deployed an experienced and skilled team with expertise spanning cloud hosting, database development, and graphical user interface design. Working closely on-site with the PetroBase team, including the founder, we gave daily updates and stayed in alignment on project priorities. This helped them accelerate development; as did learning more about the oil and gas industry, which ensure they added more robust features into the product.
We also delivered training on the new technology so PetroBase could maintain the product. Marketing assistance was also provided to help sell its features to customers.
The Result
The new PetroBase Explorer is now cloud hosted as a Single Page Application which requires no installation or monthly updates. This greatly simplifies the customer experience and reduces the burden on PetroBase to update systems. It was also designed with cutting edge open source packages which greatly reduced the development time and license costs.
We drove the software to a reliable, highly scalable and feature-rich cloud-hosted application. The ease of use and additional features reduced support costs and made the product more competitive in the market.
